Conclusion/Start Clean-Up
"Around a month ago I got turned on to Watermans’ Applied Science. I saw them because they were sponsoring a charity event and thought I’d give it a try. I’m glad I did. I think they’re a fairly new company so it’s still a bit hard to find here on Oahu. I think that will change soon, especially once water athletes start using it. What I like about Watermans’ is that you only need a very small amount. With my other sunscreen I tended to put on a thick coat to help it stay on in the water. With Watermans’, I only use a very light coat because it stays on and if I put too much, I need a lot of soap and scrubbing to get it off. I’m using the stick on my nose, cheeks and forehead. I like the stick because it goes on dry and stays dry. They have a clear one and one with a skin tone color but I prefer the clear one. I wear light color long sleeve shirts and don’t want the brown tint to get on them. I use the cream for the rest of my face and neck and am always amazed at how well this stays on. This sunscreen lotion is different than others I’ve tried. It dries to a tacky like texture which is hard to explain until you try it. After that, it says in place for hours. I applied it in the morning before the Olukai Race, did the race, sweat like a pic, rinsed off and hung out until the late afternoon for lunch and awards. I didn’t even get close to a sunburn. It’s actually kinda weird because I noticed with my friend Kekoa that we didn’t feel the normal heat of the UV rays on our face with Watermans’. I’m not sure if that’s just in my head but this stuff works good" There’s a lot of info about SPF, water resistance, etc on their site www.watermansappliedscience.com. Across Bass Strait (Australia to Tasmania - 375km) in an Outrigger canoe, raising money for Cancer Research and honoring two worthy men, Chris Robinson the original Skipper of the famous Greenpeace "Rainbow Warrior" (which the French Secret Service blew up in New Zealand in 1985). Chris passed away before we left, he was to be our Support boat Skipper. The other is Peter Corbishley, who makes the Outrigger Connection Mirage canoe here in Australia. Pete has cancer and paddled the entire Crossing.
If you like inspirational stories, adventure action with fun and beautiful remote islands, follow us as we relive the Crossing and raise awareness for Cancer Research.

There seems to be a few rumors floating around that the Gorge Outrigger Races
are not happening. Well they are most definitely happening on July 18th and 19th.
The Gorge Games, which is a multi sport event that we have been a part of over the
years is not happening this year as far as I know and that must be where the confusion is.
The Gorge Outrigger Races will happen each year as they have for the last 12 years, regardless of wether the Gorge Games happens or not.
I hope to see you all back here in the Gorge in July.

The WaveChaser Summer Downwind Series Muir Beach to Sea Trek race is Sunday June 14. This is an awesome downwind course that offers a combination of ocean paddling, Golden Gate paddling, and Richardson Bay paddling. Where else can you get a 12 mile downwind run with only an 8 mile car shuttle?
Please be aware that that conditions are typically very challenging on this course. PFDs are to be worn and the leash rule is in effect. Only racers with rough ocean experience should enter. The section near Point Bonita is especially challenging. Here are a couple of pictures from a past race here.

Registration is from 11am to 12 noon at the remote parking area at Sea Trek. There is no registration at Muir Beach. (Registrar extraordinaire Helen will only be at Sea Trek.) The race starts at Muir Beach at 1:10 and 1:30. The course will go straight out away from shore for a ways before turning down wind. The finish line is on the beach at Sea Trek. Hang around after the race for the customary WaveChaser BBQ.

Due to heavy weekend use, the lot at Muir Beach can fill up, and there is no parking along the road. Do not park at the Pelican Inn. Your best bet is to car pool from Sea Trek.

The 2009 Hawaii Island championship race was held at Pohoiki in Lower Puna, the course race ran from the recently expanded Isaac Hale Beach park to Kehena Beach.
With fresh trade winds and favorable currents, conditions were described as "epic" and the best ever at for a race a this venue. Times were fast and the paddlers had a blast. The Paddlers could clearly see the steam from the lava entering the ocean from Kilauea as they approached the finish.
OUTLAW # 10
Location: Pt Lonsdale front beach. (Map to come)
Distance: 14-16 km.
Date: 26/4/09
Race Start: 9.30am.
Couple of things to Advise:
Outlaw would like to welcome Epic Kayaks to the team. If you don’t know about this company you best view one of they slower team rides going through his paces. http://www.surfski.info/content/view/971/147/
Epic’s Vic agent & Outlaw
Andrew Nash is happy to discuss.
andrewn@jmfg.com.au
We look forward to having Jacqui Williams & Tony King of - Epic Kayaks(Australia) join us at Outlaw #10, make them welcome I know you will..
To make Outlaw more efficient & professional, we are working with software company to now be able to accurately keep, event time/result/handicap/individual race splits e.g. and all e-mailed to you
in real time after the event.
All Outlaws will soon receive an e-mail requesting information to be filled out and e-mailed back to the Blast. It’s important you fill and send back because it marries up with the software we will be using on race day and can just be dropped in to the system. If you don’t fill it out and e-mail back it will have to be done race day and then it will have to be manually up-loaded before any racing can start.
So send it in once you receive it, to save on time.
There will be a web page set–up just for Outlaw’sJ. You will be able to view all your results and others from now on & just one click on this page will also advise that you will be attending the next race as well.
Note: photos, comment all that as well..
Next race it also to establish handicaps, so get along.
Special thanks to Dez Blanchfield

“time trials” & “race” events
Another 1st:
Outlaw will announce a series soon. It will run over a year and will incorporate races on the Vic surf coast, Melb bay & Country Vic (50km Eucha mini) Each race will have points.
For example Eucha mini would be a doubled points race to reward completion & effort, fyi (OC1 outrigger takes about 4hr.20min to complete this race.
All to be ironed out soon and will advise, but BIG end of series prizes up for grabs, all announced at an Outlaw presentation night & dinner. More soon.
Outlaw # 9 put us on the Map and with the solid support from our good mates at Torquay Rescue we could not have got this far let alone move forward, to full blow series, Thank-you Lads from all the Outlaws.
Grommet Time:
Outlaw will be starting before all main races now (with some exception) a junior race, this will go about 3-5km and is open to all junior Outriggers & ski paddlers, the event course will be set on the day and will be over seen from the water by Torquay Rescue. So let get the future gen involved now.
This will start at Outlaw 10 > Pt Lonsdale.
“Outlaw” will also be opening its doors to SUP board racing & OC6 Outrigger Canoe racing. Why should we have all the fun. More to come soon.
This is the OUTLAW # 9 video from Clarkie, check it out.. It sort of shows you how good it was. http://blip.tv/file/1741002/ On behalf of the entire Outlaw’s we would like to wish Clarkie & fam all the best in his Hawaiian races this month, we would like to think Outlaw helped in his ocean preparation.

Pogue Sports has partnered with John Puakea, Jim Foti and other coaches and ran 4 successful week long camps in Kailua, Oahu.
Our last 3 weeks where sold out and had great reviews. We where finished are schedule for these season, but due to major demand and great responses, Pogue Sports is looking at adding more dates, but also offering clinics in your area.
If you would like expert coaching in your area, please contact us. We offer remote video analysis, program development and stroke improvement classes.
Our groups are no more than 12 people. This will include technique and video review by John Puakea and Ryan Pogue. We will develop a foundation of drill to advance your skills and efficiency. Each coach works with a max of 6 paddlers at a time so there is a great deal of one on one feed back.
We can offer evening or week long clinics. The cost varies depending on the location and equipment needs.
If you have a group of 10 - 12 paddlers that would like a week camp in Kailua with all our coaches and special appearance with Nappy, we can make it happen. The cost is only $550.00 USD for a week and over 16 hours of amazing coaching with some of the best.
We will be offering Molokai training classes late summer. These will be escorted by a coach boat and you will work on changes, steering, race plans and open water blending. These will be $725.00 USD PP for a week. It will also include some OC 1 training. It will also include your cost of a Bradley Lightning for the crossing. Shipping to Molokai will be additional.
We are planning a coaching clinic in England, Germany and France later in 2009. If you are in an area, and would like to have John Puakea and Ryan Pogue and others such as Danny Ching and Jim Foti, work with your group drop us an email. We can help in forming groups to make these happen.
IF you would like more information, please contact us at ryan@poguesports.com. We will be updating our clinic website shortly, www.occamps.ca
