It is out, April's issue which officially kicks off our 15th year in print. 

Want to know the skinny on why the Ala Wai is off limits for races to finish? We have the answer. Clue $$$$. In this issue (pg. 42), we look at why the DLNR wants to keep paddlers from finishing races inside the Ala Wai. We actually got some answers. If this might affect you, it could be time to start e-mailing calling everyone you know and help us to stir up the muddy waters of the Ala Wai so we can continue to finish races at Magic Island instead of beyond the reef. Hamilton Cup 2010 - it's coming!

Well it's coming up fast.........

The Hamilton Cup this year is from 24th to 27th June,  we've got a REALLY large contingent of Hawaiians back on board, so some exciting racing to be had!

Kamoa is bringing 4 teams this year - including the women's Hui Lanakila team - the racing will be furious this year! He will also be hosting a variety of clinics on the island - which we all look forward to attending
and improving our knowledge of the sport.

This year, we are also opening up the OC2 classes in the 8km and 16km, to cover all age divisions.

And we've introduced SUP for the first time, in both 8km and 250m sprint classes!

This is the perfect venue for an early season race, with the relatively calm waters of the Potomac River and hot showers in our clubhouse at the finish line.  Not to mention a post-race lunch with great food.  Come join us for the start of the 2010 outrigger racing season.

The San Diego Peninsula YMCA Bay2Bay event in So Cal is scheduled for June 12th, (an OFF weekend for SCORA racers!) and the on-line registration for this stellar event is now open!

The premier course is 20+ miles along the coast from Mission Bay to San Diego Bay, once you hit the entrance to San Diego Bay, you get an awesome view of Downtown, and as you paddle along the waterfront- you'll parallel the Coronado Bridge to finish on Coronado Island.

If you want to do the paddleboard or SUP or feel like sprinting or cruising a 5-miler that day- then start at San Diego Bay near Humphrey's and finish at Coronado. No matter what distance or challenge you set for yourself- this event can cover it for you.

2010 Liberty World Outrigger Competition

 

ENTER THE LIBERTY WORLD OUTRIGGER COMPETITION WEBSITE

New York Outrigger is proud to announce the 2010 Liberty World Outrigger Competition to be held on Saturday, July 31.. One of the largest sporting events in New York Harbor and one of the premier outrigger canoe races in the world, the day long competition hosts hundreds of international paddlers and represents the best of the Aloha spirit. Prior Liberty Competitions have brought together men’s, women’s and mixed teams from Tahiti, Sweden, Germany, Canada, Hawaii, Costa Rica, England and the East and West coast of the United States.

The ancestral Hawaiian sport of kings, outrigger canoeing comes from the Polynesian heritage of seafaring outrigger canoes. These canoes carried the ancient Polynesian people as they set forth into uncharted waters and populated islands as far away from each other as Hawaii and New Zealand. The sport, even as it migrates to new islands such as Manhattan, still emphasizes bravery, teamwork and respect for Polynesian traditions.

March 20th - Paddleme.com Championships - Malibu to Marina

Registration will take place at Mother’s Beach in Marina Del Rey. Directions Below.

LONG COURSE will begin at Malibu Pier (Surfrider Beach) in Malibu. Drop boats off at Malibu Pier before you register. Then proceed to Mother's Beach in Marina Del Rey for registration and a light breakfast. We will have one shuttle bus to take you back up to Malibu once you have registered. If you can carpool or provide your own transportation it would be helpful.

SHORT COURSE will start and finish at Mother’s Beach, Marina Del Rey.

Registration:
Registration for both long and short courses will be open at 8:00 and close at 10:30. Please note, short course is for all paddleboards & SUP. There will be no long course for Paddleboards & StandUp Boards (SUP).
Paddleboard, SUP, OC1, OC2 and surfski short course entries must be registered by 9:00. There will be no registration in Malibu.

All vessels (long or short course) are required by the Coast Guards to carry a PFD onboard. Leashes are suggested for the long course - in big surf conditions leashes are required.
Leashes will be available for purchase at a discounted price at the raffle table.

Entry fee:
$30.00 (short course / long course)
$50.00 - if you would like to participate in both the short & long course races.
Entry fee includes - T-shirt, light breakfast, lunch, awards, shuttle bus for long course and safety boats.

5.2 miles approx.(start time - 9:30am in Marina Del Rey.)

Freedom Outrigger Project

Overview

The "Freedom Outrigger Project" will encourage disabled Vets and challenged athletes to regain self-confidence and refresh their spirit for fitness by engaging them in competition with and against able-bodied athletes on an even playing field: the outrigger; the ocean. The plan is to promote an on-going outreach program to provide outrigger paddling and ultimately, racing opportunities to the returning wounded vet or to any athlete with a physical disability.
The program would be hosted in conjunction with San Diego Outrigger Canoe Club, a not-for-profit outrigger club established in 1985 by ex–Navy Seal Dee VanWinkle. The mission of our club is to bring the sport of Outrigger racing to the athlete and to enter races and be a competitive club on the West Coast and to enter as many World-Class events  as possible.-deliverables:adaptive outrigger equipment; racing opportunities; media coverage; personal growth for all participants.

Keauhou Canoe Club's Kuuipo Race

Keauhou Canoe Club's Kuuipo Race, coming up next weekend on Saturday, March 13th, is named for the late Eda "Kuuipo" Hinchcliff, a long time paddler for Keauhou and other West Hawaii canoe clubs. Eda was an enthusiastic Hawaii Island Paddlesports Association member, who did much to encourage the participation of other paddlers in events they might not otherwise think they could enter. 

Registration for the 11 mile long course Kuuipo Race will take place at the HIPA halau at Honokohau Harbor at 7:30 a.m. with the race starting at the green buoy outside Honokohau. The 3 mile Junior and 7 mile Short Course events for OC-1, OC-2, surfskis and paddleboards will have registration open at Keauhou Canoe Club's halau at Keauhou Bay at 7:30 a.m., with the Junior and paddleboard events starting at 9:00 a.m. and the short course beginning 15 minutes after the completion of the Junior event. It is hoped that, in the spirit that Eda embraced, short course paddlers will make canoes available so that more juniors can participate.

All events will cross the finish line inside Keauhou Bay, and lunch will be served and awards presented following the races. For further information, contact Jane Bockus - 322-2120

Outlaw Ocean Seriies Race 6 Barwon Heads and FREE Demo day!!!!

 

Outlaw Ocean Series Race 6 Barwon Heads

March 28th Sunday

Where:

At the Barwon Heads little jetty just up-river from the Barwon Heads bridge (1km) on Ozone Road which runs off Hitchcock Av

here will be both long course (14km) and short course (7km) events

.

The long course race will be 14km starting and finishing opposite the Little Jetty. The course will travel out into the ocean, along the coast towards Ocean Grove and back into the river. It may involve a couple of laps. Exact course details TBA, but will also depend on the conditions on the day.

This race is also a perfect opportunity for paddlers less comfortable with the surf to compete, as the short course event can be held within the protection of the Barwon Heads River rather than going out into strong winds or large swells (if these happen to be the conditions on the day).

So, to all of those paddlers new to ocean paddling or multisport or river paddlers who are not comfortable in windier conditions or larger surf, this is your perfect chance to get out there and have a crack in the world's fastest growing paddling discipline. It's bloody good fun and some fantastic scenery to be seen.

Also, to all you clubbies, your season will have just finished to come and have a crack in an ocean race. It's only an hour and, if we get enough spec ski paddlers, we have a separate event for you guys and girls. All of your northern and western clubby rivals regularly do these races in their respective states.

Junior ski, SUP and paddleboard course: This will be a river race starting at the Barwon Heads little jetty, heading under the Barwon Heads bridge, then out and around the far ocean marker. The race finishes back at the Barwon Heads little jetty.

February 13-14 WaveChaser Series Races (Northern California)

February 13-14 is the annual WaveChaser double header weekend with races on both Saturday and Sunday. Our doubleheader weekend always offers the most competitive races of the Series. Our Sunday event will be staged from Fort Baker in Sausalito just as it has been in past years. A change for this
year is that the Saturday event will be staged from just up the road at Sea Trek Kayak.

In general, the novice race will be in flat conditions, the short course races will be in moderate conditions, and the long course races will be in moderate to rough conditions. The Sunday long course (out the Golden Gate and up the coast) will be especially challenging. This course takes paddlers through the edge of the "Potato Patch" off of Point Bonita. Only strong paddlers with rough water experience should enter the Sunday long course.

Lunch will be served and awards will be handed out after each day's races.  As has been customary for our doubleheader weekend, we'll have overall awards for the best combined long course times for the two days of races. The overall awards will be given out to the fastest long course male and female surfski, the fastest long course male and female OC1, and the fastest male and female "waterman". The waterman award is for racers who paddle long course surfski one day and long course OC1 one day.

This process eliminates the need for lithographic plates and chemical usage and reduces waste disposal. We have also opted to use paper guaranteed to be grown under the guidance of the 'Forestry Stewardship Council' (FSC) who ensure the use of legal, sustainable, plantation timbers. Ocean Ohana SoCal Demo Day and Ocean of Hope Raffle

The 7th Annual Cold Hands Paddle will be held Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Cabrillo Beach, San Pedro, CA. Registration starts at 7am, race starts at 8am, and 11am is the PADDLEBOARD RAFFLE! There is no race fee, but there is a great 4 mile course (warm down from racing Dana Point, or warm up for the new season...) awards, t-shirts, free food, and a chance to win a Joe Bark paddleboard.
